Background of the Cluster

The cluster area is located at a distance of 63 km away from Guwahati city. It has some striking feature in handlomm Weaving. The cluster is weavers concentrated area S.C, S.T, OBC and other communities with the different caste of the locality live together. Weaving is an important occupation of the people of the area. The weavers produced different types of fabrics like Chadar, Mekhela, Gamocha, Wropper, Stoles, Arnai etc & try fulfil the local demand.

It is felt that if the weavers of the area are equipped with some support for some gainful activates that not only generated good income to them but also compares to their reach culture in a commercial way.

Present status of the Cluster

The proposed cluster areas are nearly N.H-37 and handloom weaving concentrated area. Each and every household there is a handloom of different varieties. Most of the weavers of the cluster areas are producing traditional products of their own uses. They are all in unorganised sectors. But the weavers are very expert in producing hand – woven products and 90% weavers are S.T./S.C. As per a study, they need proper training on Skill-upgradation, Designing, and Dyeing etc to make them commercial weavers. At present they are engaged in weaving in leisure time &   therefore it is very different for calculation of their earnings. However, an estimation has been made on their work culture that Rs. 40- Rs.50 (avg) is earning per day(10-20 days per month). Till this date, the weavers of the cluster are not getting any assistance as well as services like skill upgradation training of weaving, dyeing and designing etc. They do not have any Common Facility Centre to avail per & post weaving facilities. They are dependent on the local traders of the area. This type of block Development Cluster Project will motives weavers to become commercialization in nature which will bring happiness in the family.

The Cluster is located in the Kumrup District of Assam which is 63 Km from Guwahati city 8 Km away from National Highway 37.

Boko is a Tehsil/ block (CD) in the Kamrup district of Assam. According to Census 2011 information, the sub-district code of Boko block is 02124. The total area of Boko is 514 sq. Km. Boko has a population of 1,11,880 people. There are 23,509 houses in the sub-district. There are 139 villages in Boko block.

The cluster covers following villages under Boko Development block in Kamrup District- Gogduba, No 1 Nowapara, Bakrapara, Lampara, Sukunipara Gaon, Agchipata, Roumari, Hahim Bisnupur.

There are nearly 885 households and a total of 4791 Population is concentrating in Five ward Cluster Villages of Boko 70 No Dakhin Pub Luki G.B handloom. Among the total Population 2558 male and 2233 female member of society. However, the concentration of S.T. category Population is highest following by General and OBC. 

In the cluster villages, it has almost 100% female artisans, are 85% are married and 14.4% are Unmarried.

outcome Envisaged

On completion of the project in the selected cluster area, the income of weavers is expected to grow up to Rs.100-Rs.150 per day weaver. Further modern looms with Jacquard fittings will encourage for production of high value-added fabrics to complete in the market. Modern creative designs and expected to come up out local creative minds and coloured matching in the help of designers. Products ranges will be developed up to the exportable groups with the diversification of fabrics. All- Round socio- economic development is expected on the implementation of the project. The Common Facility Centre (CFC) is expected to play a pivotal role in the mind settings of the weavers and local people.
